The 63 AAU universities in the United States and Canada conduct research in an extraordinary array of disciplines. Their work has an unmistakable impact on global health and well-being, civic life, technological development, and economic competitiveness.

The 61 AAU universities in the United States received $17.8 billion in federal academic research funding in FY2008, or 57 percent of all federally funded research provided to colleges and universities. These institutions also spent $5.2 billion of their own institutional funds on academic research in FY2008.
